Nempe ξόλον, per antonomasiam vocata haec arbor, i. e. lignum, alias ἐριόξυλον, quasi lignum lanigerum, de cuius fructu vide plura suprâ, voce Bombax, item Gossypium. Et certe Ξυλον pro arbore in Codd. N. T. occurrit Apocal. c. 22. v. 2. et passim apud Graecos V. T. Interpretes. Apud Scriptores Ecclesisticos eqvuleum notat non semel, seu nervum, quô posteriore significatu vocem ξύλον exponit, Actor. c. 16. v. 24. Cl. Suicerus. Vide supra ubi de Ligno, et Nervo. Hodie Graecis sic dicitur ligneum instrumentum, quô ad coetus sacros convocandos, locô tintinnabuli seu campanae, utuntur, ac σημαντήριον nuncupant, magisque proprie χειροσήμαντρον, quod manibus teneatur, iilque pulsetut; ad differentiam alterius magni, quod μέγα σήμαντρον appellant.
